EASTERN CUBA

The first shots of the revolution fired in Santiago de Cuba in 1953 and Castro delivered his victory speech from the town hall balcony on New Years day 1959.  This is a melting pot of cultures and a greeat place for music.

The Sierra Maestra is Cuba's tallest mountain range and it is possible to trek up to Che and Fidel's guerrrilla hideaway from Santo Domingo.  Baracoa is a charming old town approached by a mountain hugging drive from Santiago.  It is shadowed by El Yunque, an anvil top mountain and is where Columbus first set foot on the island.  A great place to slow down, relax, and enjoy the laid-back tropical ambience.
