HAVANA
One of the world's most fascinating, vibrant and frayed capital cities. This is the political and cultural heart of Cuba and an essential place to visit. The Museum of the Revolution provides a comprehensive account of the struggle and there's a fascinating section dedicated to the life of Che Guevara. Havana Vieja is the exquisite old cobblestoned colonial centre of the city. It has a lively street life and simply oozes atmosphere and gently decaying splendour. Havana has a magnificent malecon (promenade) that runs from Old Havana to the clubs and cabarets of Vedado, past the famous Hotel Nacional from where Batista upped and fled on new years eve 1958 when he realised that Castro was about to take Santiago de Cuba. Havana has a magical atmosphere and much of 50s Americana is still evident including the lovingly maintained 40s and 50s automobiles. A trip here isn't complete without enjoying a few Mojitos and Cuba Libres at some of Hemingway's favourite bars.
