WEST OF HAVANA

Pinar del Rio

This is the western finger of land pointing to Mexico. At the tip of the finger is Maria La Gorda which boasts some of the best scuba diving off Cuba. Pinar is an agricultural area that grows fine tobacco, sugar cane and rice and is arguably the most beautiful part of Cuba. The limestone mountain ranges of the Guaniguanico have been weathered to create the stunning scenery of Vinales Valley with its many caves, steep sided valleys and mogotes, the limestone towers that thrust up from the flat valley floor that are covered in hanging vegetation. Ox and cart is the main mode of transport. There are several national parks and a UNESCO 'Reserve of the Biosphere' protecting a diverse selection of plant, animal and bird life.

Las Terrazas and Soroa

These are valley resorts in teh UNESCO Sierra del Rosario Biosphere Reserve.  They are peaceful bases for exploring the various trails that run through the semi-deciduous forest of the park.

Cayo Levisa

This tiny island, is one of our favourite cayes with white coral beaches, thick mangroves, abundant sea birds and waters rich in red snapper, lobster, marlin and sea bass.  A low-rise alternative to the larger resorts and a great choice for those seeking some quiet beach-side relaxation.
