JAMAICA ACCOMMODATION

Mocking Bird Hill - Jamaica

Mocking Bird Hill

A very tranquil hill-top retreat in 6.5 acres of tropical gardens offering glimpses through thick surrounding vegetation of the Caribbean Sea and Port Antonio in the distance. The 10 rooms are simply furnished with cool white tiles, bamboo furniture and original artwork. All rooms have either a terrace or balcony with a hammock. No rumbling air-conditioners here, rooms are naturally cooled by the mountain breeze.

Our Opinion: Its environmentally friendly policy is evident throughout.

Country Country - Jamaica

Country Country

Designed by the renowned architect Ann Hodges, winner of the Governor General's Award for Excellence in Woodcraft, the 14 cottages epitomise the best of old Jamaican country living, yet are flavoured with many modern luxuries. Well known for its Chinese and Jamaican cuisine, the restaurant and bar offer sumptuous meals directly on the beach. There is no pool but the beach is several feet from most cabins.

Our opinion: If you're looking for something sweet and simple, this is a great hotel.

Caves - Jamaica

Caves

This colourful collection of cottages are set in two acres of lush vegetation perched above Negril's volcanic caves. The 10 rooms are decorated with hand carved furniture, batik fabrics and local artwork. The water plunges down to depths of up to 30 feet and a tropical reef system comes right up to the edge of the cliff, perfect for snorkelling. Adventurous guests may choose to jump into the sea from the 'jumping platforms'.

Our Opinions: Where else can you swim into caverns under your room? We love it!

Tensing Penn

Tensing Penn

This hotel has grown and evolved since its hippie era in the early 1970s. On a cliff a 10-minute stroll from the landmark lighthouse, in 2 acres of grounds, you are surrounded by tropical plants. There are 14 rustic stone cottages covered in thatch with four-posters draped in mosquito netting. Some of the huts are elevated. Local tiles, tropical woods, bamboo rockers, ceiling fans and louvered windows set the tone.

Our Opinion: Hidden away from the world, this place is a little gem.

Jakes

Jakes

Jakes' restaurant, pool and 10 cottages are an electic mix of Jamaican, Mexican, Greek and Catalan styles. Each room is furnished with Jamican antiques, local art and CD players with a collection of CD's. Remaining true to Jamaican principles of simplicity, rooms do not have phones, televisions or air-conditioning; ocean breezes and ceiling fans provide natural cooling. Its character and seclusion attracts a diverse mix of guests.

Four Seasons Hotel Kingston - Jamaica

Four Seasons Hotel Kingston

The Four Seasons Hotel is less than 5 minutes walk from the two major Uptown centres of New Kingston and Half Way Tree.  It’s grounds are foliated with a wide selection of tropical fruit trees and the character of this converted Edwardian home combines European and Jamaican influences.  Dark oak panelling and chandeliers greet you but the warm reception and friendly service is typically Jamaican.

Our Opinion: This is a comfortable and secure choice of accommodation in Kingston that offers character and friendly service.
