TOBAGO ACCOMMODATION

Arnos Vale Hotel - Tobago

Arnos Vale Hotel

Nestled against the gentle slopes and within the grounds of a 450-acre plantation estate. Host to beautiful birds, secluded beach and pristine coral reef, the hotel combines a rich historic past with modern conveniences. 29 rooms are scattered around the valley in a variety of buildings. All rooms are en-suite and air-conditioned. The main reception bar and restaurant are in the old plantation house and the property is laced with trails.

Our Opinion: A comfortable rainforest experience with a good variety of bird-life.

Blue Haven Hotel - Tobago

Blue Haven Hotel

Renovated to recapture the elegance of its heyday in the forties and fifties when Robert Mitchum and Rita Hayworth were among the guests. This hotel clings to 5 acres of promontry that looks east over sandy Bacolet Bay and west towards Tobagos sleepy capital, Scarborough. All 55 rooms have ocean views. A pool overlooks the ocean and meals may be taken in the colonial style villa or on the terrace.

Our Opinion: Few hotels in Tobago offer such colonial character and elegance.

Castara Retreats - Tobago

Castara Retreats

This villa complex includes two two-bedroom suites and four one-bedroom suites. Rainforest Suite, which sleeps four, sits above Hummingbird 1 and Hummingbird 2 – each one bedroom apartments. Fisherman's Lodge is a characterful Caribbean shack that has been beautifully renovated to sleep two. All accommodation is self catering. The rooms are just three minutes walk up from the lovely beach and Castara village - where you'll find little development and friendly local people.

Our Opinion: Castara Retreat makes an ideal base on Tobago for exploration.

Karriwak Village - Tobago

Karriwak Village

Set within lush tropical grounds around a swimming pool, Kariwak provides a perfect base to explore the west end of the island. The hotel has 24 attractively designed rooms, 18 of which surround the pool and the remaining six are tucked away amongst the flowers and palm trees of the rear garden. The restaurant has a great reputation among Tobagonians. A haven in an area that caters mostly for package holidays.

Our Opinion: This property retains its small and unspoilt atmosphere.

Cuffie River Nature Retreat - Tobago

Cuffie River Nature Retreat

This eco-lodge is situated on the edge of the oldest protected rainforest in the Western Hemisphere. There are just 10 rooms, each of which has its own private balcony and bathroom. The owner, Regina Sanchez, cooks some fabulous home grown organic food. There are plenty of walking opportunities straight into untamed forest. Their guide will share his extensive knowledge of the flora and fauna with you.

Our Opinion: A great little rainforest retreat and one of our special favourites!

Blue Waters Inn - Tobago

Blue Waters Inn

The hotel has 38 rooms, all modern and recently redecorated with ceiling fan and balcony or patio. There are three bungalows with full kitchens that interconnect to form suites but the majority of rooms are in the two storey main block and all face the sea. The hotel has a good bar and restaurant. Its very quiet and there is little to do except relax and 'lime', the Tobago phrase for sitting with a drink and watching life go by.

Our Opinion: This is a charming sea front hotel.

Seahorse Inn - Tobago

Seahorse Inn

Surrounded by tropical gardens the inn has views of Grafton Beach, which is one of the best places to see giant turtles during egg-laying season. The property is built chiefly from teak and has just four rooms so it's essential to book early. The restaurant has an excellent reputation and offers great sunset views. The owners are very welcoming hosts and have worked for years with one of the island's top rainforest and birding guides.

Our opinion: Small and friendly - a great low key choice.
