TRINIDAD ACCOMMODATION

Acajou Hotel - Trinidad

Acajou Hotel

This beautifully designed hotel consists of 6 unique Balinese style cabins on stilts, built with influence from Indonesian, Polynesian and Japanese architecture. Rooms are elegantly furnished, all have a private terrace with views over the lagoon and the Caribbean Sea. Hummingbirds can be seen from your terrace, and in the turtle season you can stroll the 50 metres to the beach where they nest.

Our Opinion: This is a great option for those who want real comfort.

Mount Plaisir Estate, Trinidad

Mount Plaisir Estate

The estate has only 10 rooms (accommodating between 2-6 people). All rooms are funkily designed and decorated with the work of local artists. Some rooms face the tropical gardens and from others you can walk directly onto the beach. Grande Riviere has to be one of the best places in the Caribbean to see giant turtle lay eggs and hatch and is a beautiful base from where you can explore the jungle and fabulous coastline.  You should note that this is not a sunbathing beach.  It is a wild beach, great for walking along.

Our Opinion: Funky and laid back, this is a lovely place to stay but not luxurious!

Carnettas Inn, Trinidad

Carnettas Inn

The inn is divided by the Maraval River, which is spanned by a small bridge. All 14 rooms are en-suite and the different buildings are divided by lots of tropical vegetation and sun-dappled leafy areas. Rooms are all air conditioned and the property is visited by a wide variety of tropical birds. Expect a hearty welcome from Winston and Carnetta Borrell, their restaurant has a reputation in the valley for good food.

Our Opinion: This is a good choice for those who want to be close to the city.

Asa Wright Nature Centre - Trinidad

Asa Wright Nature Centre

The centre was established in 1967 as a conservation, recreation and study area relating to the tropical wildlife of the island. Accommodation comprises of a couple of large colonial style rooms in the main house that have highly polished wooden floors or a series of very comfortable bungalows staggered on the hill adjacent to the estate house, each of which has a private balcony. Each room has an en-suite bathroom.

Our Opinion: One of the world's premier birding venues.

Pax Guesthouse - Trinidad

Pax Guesthouse

Pax is the oldest guesthouse in the country and its managers have put a lot of effort into renovating the property and developing a hummingbird feeding terrace. A walking trail that weaves through the 100 acre estate leads to a lookout in the mountains. The 18 rooms are simple but attractive and a few are colonial in style, with furniture made by the local monks. A very friendly and peaceful guesthouse.

Our Opinion: Run by owners who are passionate about Trinidad and its wildlife.
