WESTERN BELIZE

Cayo District

Cayo attracts the visitor who is interested in long treks through foliage, canoe rides, horseback trips to hidden waterfalls and quiet safaris in search of the shy animals and flamboyant birdlife of the Belizean forest.

San Ignacio is a good base to see the nearby sights of Xunantunich Maya ruins, Mountain Pine Ridge, Macal River, Guanacaste Park and Tikal in Guatemala. Accommodation is available in the town itself or you can stay in one of the cottage resorts in the Cayo countryside which are extremely popular with wildlife lovers and those who want to relax and escape from it all. Some of the best include Pooks Hill, Chaa Creek and Blancaneaux Lodge.
