CARIBBEAN COAST
Tortuguero National Park
This is one of the world's most important nesting sites for green sea turtles and home to 50 kinds of fish, countless birds and 160 different mammal species. Here you can watch the turtles shuffle up the beach to leave their eggs buried in the sands. Only accessible by air or through the canals by boat, this area is perfect for bird and wildlife spotting.
Sarapiqui
The tropical lowland area of Sarapiqui offers a great mixture of plantation lands and premontane rainforest. The Rio Sarapiqui runs through in a spectacular manner (perfect for rafting). One of the richest areas in the country for birding, the great green macaw is one of the highlights. Some lodges have set up a bridge canopy system with some sections crossing the roaring river below. There are also great trails for hiking, mountain biking and kayaking. Sarapiqui serves as a perfect stop off point for the journey from Tortuguero to Arenal or visa versa.
Puerto Viejo de Talamanca
If you are looking for a remote coastal area with few people Puerto Viejo has three picturesque beaches and a thriving indigenous culture - it is a lovely, relaxed option. One of our favourite and most unusual lodges is in this region is a tented camp – ‘Almonds and Corals’. This is for those who seek a little bit more adventure! From here the guides can transfer you into Panama either for a short two-day trip to visit Bocas del Toro National Marine Park or to begin the Panamanian leg of your tour.
