NEW HOTELS - THE WAKA RESORTS

Waka Shorea

The Waka Collection is a series of small, charming, stylish hotels, which aim to offer a true Balinese experience. The design style of the hotels is traditional but modern; monastic in its simplicity but with all the creature comforts included. They deliberately avoid the use of televisions, air-conditioners and commercial Balinese furniture. Instead they offer a "less is more" approach, using a simplistic look, which features local fabrics, stone and wood. They are built to work in harmony with the land, to feature the surrounding flora and fauna, and to involve the local people in the everyday working environment.

Our favourite of The Waka Collection is the Waka Shorea, which is located in Bali Barat, Bali’s most important National Park with unspoiled white sand and crystal clear waters. Waka Shorea nestles on a protective peninsula a ten minute boat ride from the mainland, and is the only resort permitted on the parks peninsula. Fourteen lanais and two villas are uniquely designed to exist in harmony with the landscape, so much so in fact that it is not unusual to wake up to the sound of monkeys climbing around on your roof! The monkeys are not alone, the resort is subject to strict National Park rules and so all flora and fauna is kept as untouched as possible which means that native deer often wander through and they even have a resident wild pig that makes an appearance every now and again! Although secluded there is always something to do at Waka Shorea whether it be sea kayaking, guided cycling and walking trails, sailing or just an afternoon at the health spa with massage and beauty treatments. However the main highlight and one definitely not to be missed is the diving and snorkelling at the nearby Menjangan Island. Here you’ll find one of the most spectacular underwater environments in Indonesia with an abundance of brightly coloured living coral, hundreds of varieties of fish and a sheer drop off that is breathtaking to snorkel over. Staying at the Waka Shorea only 10 minutes boat ride from the island gives you the advantage of being able to get there and have the site to yourself before any day trippers arrive.
