Lose the lag by overnighting in the States and arrive early and fresh into Belize where you will immediately head for the hills and the cool air of the Mountain Pine Ridge. Walk, bicycle, horse-ride and soak up the epic scenery. Caracol and Xunantunich are fascinating local Mayan ruins. You may fancy day-tripping across the border into Guatemala to vist Tikal, possibly Central America's most impressive Mayan site, semi-covered by jungle and constantly disturbed by the coarse roar of howler monkeys. Flying south to the little-visited Toledo District provides great views of a palm-fringed coast out of the left window and the Mayan Mountains to the right.
