THE ROSS SEA

The Ross Sea is situated almost entirely within the Antarctic Circle. To the west is the active volcanic island of Mount Erebus, to the south the 30m high Ross Ice Shelf. Immense tabular icebergs, emperor penguins, minke whales and orcas are to be found in this region.

The Sub-Antarctic Islands belonging to Australia and New Zealand are almost all volcanic in origin. These tiny remote dots in an often inhospitable ocean provide precious breeding grounds for many rare plant, bird and mammal species.
