NORTHWEST PASSAGE

A trip through one of the world’s most elusive sea routes must surely be tempting for all those with a love for a unique and once in a lifetime adventure. Linking the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans through Canada’s far north, explorers sought this mythical sea route for centuries until Roald Amundsen’s success in 19th Century. Soak in the majestic white scenery, marvel at the abundance of seabirds accompanying your vessels and watch for polar bear, walrus, musk-ox and Arctic fox.

This trip will appeal to anyone with a great sense of adventure and particularly those who have been captivated by historical accounts of early explorations into the area. There is also a wonderful chance to discover the local wildlife.
Days 2-4 - Beechey Island
Journey to Resolute and on to Nunvaut where you will board your ship. Visit Beechey Island where Franklin spent a winter before dissapearing and cruise through the narrow Bellot Strait which seperates northernmost mainland North America and Somerset.

Journey on to King William Island. Here near Coborg Island two of Franklin's trips were caught in the ice for two winters, the remains of the expedition were only found 10 years later at Victory Point. Visit the small Inuit village of Usqsuqtuuq or Gjoa Haven, where Amundsen spent a winter, before following in his footsteps through Simpson Strait to Jenny Lind Island and perhaps the opportunity for kayaking.
Days 9-13 - Amundsen Gulf
Enter the second of Canada's three Arctic territories, the Northwest Territories and visit the tiny community of Holman. At smoking Hills you will witness the extraordinary bituminous shale which has been burning spontaneously for centuries. Follow in the footsteps of the great explorers as you head through the Amundsen Gulf and perhaps visit the remains of his boat Maud which he sailed in 1922-24. As you sail through these historic waters you will have plenty of opportunity to look out for bears and the elusive narwhal and rare single-tusked whales.
Day 14 - Ottawa
You have sailed the Northwest Passage! Fly to Ottawa for an overnight stay and your onward flight to the UK.
