PATAGONIA

El Calafate

This modern town on the edge of Lago Argentino is the hub of tours to the Glaciares National Park. The resultant convergence of the Moreno Glacier and lake is a wall of blue ice stretching some 5km, which regularly cracks house-sized chunks into the surrounding waters. Further north is the Fitzroy Massif - a must for trekkers.

Tierra Del Fuego

This island was named by Europeans whose first sight of the land was the glow of fires lit everywhere by the native population to fend off the cold. Tierra del Fuego contains all the different ecosystems, which typify Patagonia on a single island: South Atlantic coast, bushy steppe, Andes surrounded by glaciers, snow, lakes and forests.

Trelew and the Valdez Peninsula

The peninsula is a haven for marine wildlife. From June to mid December Southern Right Whales can be seen, with the Orcas favouring February to March. Penguins, Sealions and Elephant Seals can also be seen.
