ANGKOR
The majestic temples of Angkor, in north-west Cambodia belong to the classic period of Khmer art and civilisation. They were the creation of a succession of Khmer kings who presided over an empire that dominated the region from 800 to 1430, reaching its peak in the 12th Century. From the 15th Century, the temples were abandoned and forgotten by the world until their rediscovery in 1861 by French naturalist Henri Mouhot. Today, many of the temples remain in surprisingly good condition while others are under restoration.
