SHANGHAI
Once dubbed the 'Paris of the East', Shanghai is a modern bustling cosmopolitan city, blending east and west, old and new. On one side of the Huangpu River is the famous Bund, where 1920's Western architecture remains as a reminder of its colonial past. Facing this on the other side of the river the buildings are reaching for the sky in the brand new Pudong area. Most unusual of the designs is the Oriental Pearl Tower, looking slightly reminiscent of a spaceship! Not to be missed in Shanghai is the shopping on Nanjing Road, an evening amble along the Bund, the Shanghai Museum and the Jade Buddha Temple housing an exquisite 2m high white jade Buddha. The Yu Gardens are also worth a visit: founded as a private garden in 1559, but destroyed during the Opium Wars, they have been restored and are a beautiful example of a classical Chinese style garden.
