YANGZE RIVER
The Yangtze River is the longest river in China as well as the third longest river in the world. It originates in Qinghai province and stretches 6300km, through 9 provinces, to the East China Sea, just north of Shanghai. This mighty river is at its most impressive between Fengjie and Yichang where the river passes through the famous Three Gorges. Xiling Gorge, the longest of the three is really a collection of several smaller gorges. The second gorge, Wu Gorge is fringed by 12 mountain peaks and the finale is Qutang gorge, only 8km long but one of the most spectacular as the river narrows to 100m between almost perpendicular walls. The Three Gorges Dam project is now well underway, with Phase 2 complete this year. Final completion is expected in 2009 when the river from Yichang back to Chongqing will be flooded to 175m, 1.5 million people will have been re-located and the scenery will be dramatically changed.
