LOMBOK
It has often been said that ‘Lombok is like Bali 20 years ago’! Do not be misled by that statement. It is true that the density of traffic on the island is minimal compared to Bali and with more than 60% of the population still working on the land there is a wonderful relaxed rural atmosphere. However, although there is a small proportion of people descended from former Balinese invaders, the indigenous ‘Sasak’ population are Moslem and thus you will not find here such a preponderance of cultural sites, celebrations and festivals. Lombok then is more for that laid-back holiday: take a walk or cycle through the attractive landscape, or enjoy the excellent diving and snorkelling off the nearby Gili Islands, north-west of Lombok.
