The cultural heart of Japan is its ancient capital of Kyoto, with its many stunning temples and gardens as well as its even older neighbour Nara. By contrast, the city of Osaka offers a taste of vibrant modern Japan, though it also boasts its own impressive castle, as does the nearby town of Himeji.
