Saman Villas

Saman Villas

One of Sri Lanka's first boutique hotels, Saman Villas has recently been extensively refurbished. Located just outside Bentota town it sits squarely on a rocky promontory. Though only 10 years old it is built in elegant, colonial style. The main hotel facilities are accessed from an open terrace giving superb views through the frangipani-lined gardens.

Our Opinion: A sophisticated retreat ideal for honeymooners.

Taj Exotica

Taj Exotica

The Taj Exotica is set just above the popular Bentota beach on the coast south of Colombo. The 160 room hotel has good facilities an a high level of service. The large swimming pool and sun deck area is on the third floor level, affording spectacular views of the golden sands, and the gardens lead down to the beach on both sides of the hotel. All rooms are ocean-facing with balconies.

Our Opinion: A good option offering high levels of service and a beautiful location

Taru Villas

Taru Villas

Conceived by one of Sri Lanka’s foremost fashion designers, Taru Villas is a wonderful addition to Sri Lanka’s growing choice of boutique hotels. The simple yet striking style links open arched white washed architecture with antique figurines and bold art. The garden is full of frangipani blossoms and there is a cool turquoise pool. At the bottom of the garden lies an uncrowded sandy beach.

Our Opinion: We think this is a great option for those looking for a stylish getaway.

The Beach Hotel - Negombo

The Beach Hotel - Negombo

The Beach Hotel in Negombo, a fishing town on the west coast is only about 15 minutes drive from the international airport. This newly refurbished property offers complete luxury on a beautiful beach. The rooms are spacious and well-equipped with dark wooden furniture and excellent bathrooms. Other facilities include fine dining and a lovely pool.

Our Opinion: An excellent hotel for arrivals or departures, or simply for relaxing on the beach.

The Heritance - Ahungalle

The Heritance at Ahungalle (formally the Triton), stands alone on a beautiful stretch of beach between Bentota and Hikkaduwa, and has just reopened after an extensive refurbishment. The hotel, designed by renowned Sri Lankan architect Geoffrey Bawa, offers a feeling of space and tranquility. The deluxe rooms are elegant and contemporary.

Our Opinion: An excellent five star option on a pristine beach , offering an elegant and relaxing option.

The Deer Park

The Deer Park

In a beautiful setting overlooking the Giritale Reservoir, this hotel is ideally placed for exploring the cultural triangle and a number of national wildlife parks. There are 77 rooms furnished in a blend of vibrant colours and Asian craft, 61 have open-air garden bathrooms. There is a pool and a spa and an excellent restaurant.

Our opinion: A lovely place to stay for the cultural triangle.

The Kandy House

The Kandy House

The ancestral home of one of Kandy's most influential aristocratic families, Kandy House was built in 1804. Filled with antique furniture, there are seven luxury suites set around a central courtyard. Dine in style in the original dining room surrounded by ancestral portraits or less formally on the verandah overlooking the hills. Relax after sightseeing by the stunning swimming pool landscaped into the surrounding paddy fields.

Our Opinion: Retains the atmosphere of a private country home.

The Tea Factory

The Tea Factory

The Tea Factory lies, alone and unique, on the slopes of the tea plantations at Kandapola, high above the hill-country town of Nuwara Eliya. Once exactly as it claims - a tea factory built in the 1930s, it has been lovingly restored. The hotel has brought much needed employment to the area and this is reflected by the delightful staff.

Our Opinion: A one off - you will never stay anywhere else quite like it.

Heritance Kandalama

Heritance Kandalama

Set against a hillside at the edge of the Kandalama tank (reservoir), the Heritance Kandalama Hotel almost appears to be part of the scenery. Festooned with vegetation, it incorporates the rocks into its structure. A paradise for naturalists - many species of birds, bats, monkeys, and other creatures can be observed from the comfort of your room.

Our Opinion: One of the best hotel experiences in Sri Lanka.

Earls Regency

The Earls Regency, lies alongside the broad Maheweli River, overlooked by the lush Knuckles mountain range, and offers modern four-star comfort in a central, but relatively peaceful, corner of the hill-country capital of Kandy. The hotel has a sense of grandeur from the moment you approach its palatial lobby, with indoor waterfall. As well as a large lounge bar, mini lounge areas offer a welcome personal touch. The Far Pavilion restaurant is light and airy and there is a 24-hour coffee shop. There is also a large swimming pool. The 84 well-appointed rooms, most with private balcony, offer satellite tv, mini bar, safety deposit box, 24-hr room service, laundry service.

Our opinion: A modern hotel with international standards.

Kirchyan Bungalow is a delightful four bedroom former planter’s property on the edge of the Aislabie tea estate near Bandarawela. The rolling lawns and well tended flower beds attract a wealth of birdlife, and the recent addition of a swimming pool has added to the tranquil relaxing ambiance. The en-suite rooms have high ceilings and period furniture and the friendly attentive service makes it feel as if you are a guest at a country house.

Our Opinion: A lovely traditional place in the tea country.

Elephant Corridor

Elephant Corridor is a small luxury boutique hotel set on 200 acres of unfenced land near to the Sigiriya rock fortress. Its 24 individual cottage style rooms offer a designer lifestyle with personal service, and a fine dining restaurant with views of Sigiriya. The grounds are visited by a variety of wildlife, and rooms are provided with binoculars and sketch pads and easels. There is also a spa, a fully equipped gym and a large pool.

Our Opinion: If you are looking for a boutique style hotel with personal service away from it all in a beautiful natural setting, this could fit the bill.

Ceylon Tea Trails - Sri Lanka

Ceylon Tea Trails

Ceylon Tea Trails is situated south of Hatton in the Dickoya and Bogawantalawa region of the hill country in south-central Sri Lanka. There are four bungalows, between 4km and 15km apart, and the rooms are named after former British estate managers who lived in the bungalows. Master Suites have separate living rooms and private gardens, Garden Suites have private gardens. All rooms have en-suite bathrooms with twin wash basins and a traditional bathtub with shower.

Inspired by the local Dutch Fort, this charming hotel is situated in on the south-west coast with superb views of the Indian Ocean. It is situated on a rocky headland, with a stretch of beach either side, only 10 minutes drive from Galle, a 16th Century town founded by the Portuguese. All airconditioned rooms are well equiped with bathtub & shower; TV; telephone; tea/coffee making facilities; in-room safe; hairdryer; minibar; balcony with sea view. Transfer from the airport takes 4 hours.

Our Opinion: A firm favourite for many years with our clients.

Yala Village Hotel

Overlooking the historic Yala lighthouse, this hotel opened in 2003. It blends subtly into scrub forest, close to Yala Game Park, arguably providing the best leopard sanctuary in Asia. Forty well-appointed chalets, which come in three different sizes (single, twin and quad) enjoy a scenic location, stretching from a lagoon to the border of Palatupana-Kirinda beach, which boasts some of Sri-Lanka's finest unspoilt sand.

Our Opinion: Comfortable lodge and an excellent base for wildlife enthusiasts.

This hotel is situated in the historic centre of Galle. It has been beautifully restored by its loving owners, who have an impeccable eye for detail. It offers nine unique suites and four peaceful garden rooms, a sparkling swimming pool, a world-class restaurant, highly skilled spa therapists and most importantly, a dedicated team of young Sri Lankan staff.

Our Opinion: Our preferred hotel in the centre of Galle - elegant and stylish.

Rainforest Edge is a newly opened rustic boutique style property set on a hilltop at the edge of the UNESCO World Heritage Singharaja rainforest. The property offers 7 unique rooms (1 family room) with spectacular views over the tea plantations. For the more active, kayaking, mountain biking and jungle trekking can be arranged. The pool is a natural water pool, energy is solar or kerosene lamps – no TVs or telephones – and most of the Sri Lankan cooking uses locally grown organic fare, much produced on the property itself.

Our Opinion: A peaceful eco-friendly getaway destination. The perfect place to relax and unwind.

Dutch House

This nineteenth century property, set on a hill above Galle, has been beautifully restored and converted to provide four delightful suites. The very spacious rooms all have high ceilings, four poster beds and period furniture, and the grounds are beautifully tended, with a large lawn (perfect for croquet) and an inviting infinity-edge pool. The food is excellent, with guests invited to discuss their preferences with the chef.

Our Opinion: A beautiful, tranquil setting just above the main town within walking distance (maybe a taxi ride back up the hill). Elegant and restful luxury.
