PHUKET
Known as the 'Pearl of the Andaman', Phuket is Thailand's largest island, connected to the mainland by bridges. Much of its wealth originally derived from tin mining but in recent years Phuket is known best as a major beach destination, playing host to thousands of tourists every year. The breathtaking scenery above and below the water, the forested hillsides, and the friendly locals all help to give Phuket the lovely character that keeps visitors returning. Although popular it is possible to escape the crowds. Avoid the over-developed Patong Bay, fun for a visit but too busy for a relaxing holiday base. We prefer the quieter areas of Bang Thao Bay, Karon or Kata beach.
