SAPA BY VICTORIA EXPRESS
The hills to the north of Hanoi are inhabited by ethnic groups with cultures and traditions that have only become exposed to the modern world within the last decade or so. The main tourist gateway to these tribes is Sapa, an old French hill station built in 1922 close to the border with China. The largest and most colourful of the tribes are the Hmong and Dzao but the various weekend markets attract minorities from all over the region. High in the Hoang Lien Son Mountains Sapa lies in the shadow of Mt Fansipan, which at 3143 m is Vietnam's highest: the area is scenically beautiful and good for trekking. The best time to visit the mountains is April/May and September/October when the weather is often cool and clear. Lao Cai on the border with China is at the end of the railway from Hanoi and the transit point for travelling to/from Sapa.
Day 2 - Sapa
Arrive early at Lao Cai and transfer up winding mountain road to Sapa. After breakfast take a late morning climb up Sapa hill to see rare orchids, unusual rock formations and flowers. After lunch at a local restaurant travel by Russian jeep along the rim of a deep valley and trek to Ta Van village, home to Hmong, Dzao and Dzay minorities.
